Chivalry

When I observe people in public these days, I can see that many of the once common courtesies have all but disappeared. The idea of what it is to be a man has become so unrecognizable that it borders on absurd. Men in general have become more selfish and self-centered, vulgar, rude and just plain disrespectful. They think they always come first and treat others rudely and obnoxiously. What happened to art of chivalry and being a gentleman? What happened decency? There was a time when men were more refined, conscientious, and tasteful. Why is it so hard for men to be decent in public? What happened to opening doors for others, or pulling out a chair for a lady? If seated, it was once courteous to stand when being introduced to someone. Now I rarely see people stand when meeting someone and they act as though they cannot be bothers with moving. It was also polite to have a woman walk first. Now I generally see the man walk first and not even wait for their lady. To me this shows complete disrespect for a woman. Men should be protective of a lady. When walking together on the sidewalk, a man should walk on the street side in order to protect her from splashes or other possible threats. If a woman is chilled, it was common for a man to place his jacket around her shoulders. I have not seen that in a long time. When someone enters a room, they should remove their hat. Today I see men wearing hats inside restaurants, theaters, concerts, or anyplace indoors. Why do you need to wear a hat inside? Do men still hold a woman's coat while she slips into it? Sure she can do it herself but it is a sign of respect to hold her coat. These are some common acts of chivalry and etiquette that have gone by the wayside. I challenge men to be more chivalrous and treat others and especially women with more respect and decency. The world can be far better and more civilized by following the tried but true practice of chivalry.
