What do you prefer, inland plains, mountains or ocean/Beach? It seems everyone has their preference, as they should. But what is it that makes the determination? Some people prefer the inland plains because they don’t like the salt water and the sand. Or some like the ocean and sand but hates the mountains or flat lands. What is the attraction to either? The mountains are generally sparsely populated, quiet, low traffic, and very calming. There are also drawbacks like limited access to stores, medical care and other essentials. Living in the mountains often requires planning in terms of buying food and supplies. The closest store can be many miles away. Coastal areas tend to be heavily populated, crowded, noisy, lots of traffic and generally not very calming unless you can find a quiet stretch of beach. But coastal areas also have easy access to shopping, theater, all kinds of entertainment and healthcare. I personally see the beauty and attraction to both the mountains and the ocean. I grew up on the flat lands of the Midwest and although it can be beautiful it is also very boring and tends to be windy. My ideal location is where the mountains are close to the ocean so I can take advantage of both. I love walking on the beach, my feet in the salt water, smelling the ocean breeze and feeling the sun beating down. But I also like to hike and what better place to hike than the mountains. The fresh mountain air, cool temperatures, traversing a narrow trail with some elevation, and then arriving at a scenic vista with amazing views. I live in a coastal area and love having access to everything but too much of that can also build up stress and the feeling of being closed in. That is when I need to get away from the noise and crowds, to detox from life’s hassles and clear the mind. What is your preference, mountains, flat lands, rolling hills, or coastal living?
