The View

I’m sitting here on the balcony of our rented condo watching the ocean waves drape the sand in salt, foam and shells. This condo is our second home 90 miles north of our main home that I live in full time. It’s a long story for this but the short story is my wife’s job just happened to be too far away to commute daily so we decided to rent a place. But that is not the story for today. The story for today is the view. The picture above is the view from our balcony looking directly at the Atlantic Ocean. We are literally steps from the water. Waking up in the morning looking directly at the sunrise is mesmerizing. Hanging on the balcony or sitting on the beach with the sound of the waves is hard to give up. Being able to just step out our door onto the beach for a long walk is appealing. The flip side is it is also easy to take this for granted. You see it all the time and soon it becomes just “there”, in the background. You start walking on the beach less and don’t take the time to get out the chairs and sit on the beach. Sounds crazy but it happens. Our main home we have now is about 11 miles from the beach and yet we went to the beach more when we lived in the Midwest and came to visit the condo we owned in West Palm Beach. Again, Crazy, right?
Even with all that, I am still going to miss this view. The reason is my wife recently accepted a job offer as the President and CEO of another organization. I am very happy for her. Her new job is close to our home, so we no longer need the rented condo. After a busy week at work, I do enjoy coming to the condo to relax and watch the waves while sipping a good Scotch. Enjoying the salty sea air blow over me and the soothing sound of the crashing waves. Watching the sun or moon rise over the eastern horizon. Magical! But alas it will all end and we will go back to our main home full time, no ocean view on the weekends, no sunrise or moon rise over the water. I guess I will have to settle for moonlight shining on our pool. One consolation is our pool is a saltwater pool. (insert laughter here). Maybe one day we will find ourselves once again with a home with water views but if or until that happens, we can at least have the memories of this place. Calming and soothing with the savory taste of the salt sea air. Serenity!

Hello Jill. Yes, there seems to be tradeoffs to a lot of positive things. The question is whether the positives outweigh the negatives...
Doesn’t it seem that with every great thing there is a bit of sacrifice?
